NEWLY appointed Sports Minister Kirsty Coventry said she was determined to create a platform for Zimbabwean athletes so that they could be recognised internationally.

The first local sports personality to be appointed Sports Minister also said sports and arts could be a source of employment for many youths throughout the country.

“There is an opportunity to creating empowerment for our youth through sports, through arts, through creating platforms and better support to our athletes, to our artists so that they can go and shine and be recognised internationally,” said Coventry soon after her swearing in at State House on Monday.

“There are also many opportunities in sports and arts sector that can also be used by stakeholders involved in the sector to make a living out of that.”

Said Coventry, “I will be meeting stakeholders in the sports sector and some from the arts industry to have a better understanding and idea and a concept of what they think is important for them in the next few years.

“…So that’s what I will be doing and then see what can be prioritised from those different conversations.

“I have also heard there are very vital things to be taken care of by the way. I will be learning on the permanent secretaries and staff within the ministry and we will also be investigating a few areas such as arts to stop the rot.”

Commenting on her appointment, Coventry said was excited about the recognition.

“For myself I think it’s an exciting time,” she said.
