Zimbabwe national football team former midfield maestro has criticised ZIFA for excluding him from the Warriors Legends team that took part in an exhibition match against the visiting Barcelona Legends that was held on Sunday at the National Sports Stadium.
Muhoni, who turned up for Black Rhinos before moving to Dynamos football club was an ever-present feature for the Warriors during his playing days. He is mostly remembered for his exploits against Mali in 2003 where he scored the all-important solitary goal that sent Zimbabwe to the 2004 Africa Cup of Nations finals in Tunisia for the first time ever.
Although that goal most certainly ensured that Muhoni’s name would be etched in the history books of Zimbabwean football, the former midfielder was overlooked for the Warriors Legends match and he was not particularly pleased with that.
“Yesterday I was at the national sports stadium, when I was walking in people were seeing me not putting on the soccer dressing and they started asking why I was not playing and saying I was the one who scored the important goal (against Mali). They were making noise at the VIP stand so I told them no, that’s football, we have to take it as it is,” said Muhoni on Diamond FM.
“But I feel I was supposed to be there, I even phoned Mr Gwesela and he said to me that he would consider me next time because the list had already been done. But you see now, the Matebeleland region, all the players who played with me those guy Gidiza (Sibanda), Joannes Ngodzo they were there. They came all the way from Bulawayo but Harare side, the Shona side we were omitted.”
Muhoni also questioned the inclusion of some players who he deemed to be not worthy of being called Legends.
“You take Ashley Rambanepasi, he is not a legend. I’m a legend, I played in the first eleven and I was at the nations cup so people will start to wonder why am I here in the terraces when I must be there (playing). I talked to those guys Benjani (Mwaruwaru) and Peter Ndlovu and they said it was a mistake,I should have been in those guys were called from the UK but I was in Mutare and didn’t receive any call?”
